Applying for jobs, affordable housing, insurance and even travel can be compromised by having a criminal record. An expungement removes this stumbling block and can help you regain normalcy in your life.

Expunction is the destruction of a criminal record by court order. An expungement restores you to the status you had before the criminal record existed. Once an expungement has been granted, you do not have to state that you were ever arrested or stood trial for the expunged offense.

In North Carolina, expunction is generally limited to three sets of circumstances:

First-time nonviolent offenses committed more than 15 years ago

First-time offenses committed under the age of 18 or 22

Charges that resulted in dismissal or acquittal

Sex crimes, serious drug offenses and major felonies cannot be expunged.
